Program Description
High performing boards stay abreast of emerging trends in the nonprofit sector and engage in meaningful conversations about that which is of the greatest importance. This session will start with a review of four core trends in today's complex world: the demand for accountability, the importance of governing intentionally, the value of a strategically composed board, and the call for increased board engagement.
This session will look at governance in a new way and urge participants to govern as a leader using the Governance as Leadership framework. This framework offers three modes of governance - fiduciary, strategic, and generative - that together offer board members more meaningful, consequential work resulting in better governed organizations. With a focus on generative thinking, the most neglected work of a board of directors, participants will learn how to more effectively make important decisions about mission and strategy, problem-solve, tape into their board's full potential, and engage their board in more substantive issues.
Program Objectives
By attending Governance as Leadership and Emerging Trends, attendees will:
- Engage in discussion on four of today's core trends in nonprofit governance, exploring boardroom tools and practices that support good governance.
- Offer clarity on the distinctive roles of governance and management.
- Reframe the work of the board in the fiduciary, strategic, and generative models.
- Address the importance of a strong constructive partnership between the board and the chief executive.
- Be guided on how to bring the Governance as Leadership techniques into one's own boardroom.
